School Newspaper Seized, Sly Sloganeering Ensues

The Associated Press has picked up the story about the Tennessee high school that seized all 1,800 copies of the student newspaper because it featured an informative article about birth control.

School officials say they also object to a story about tattoos and body piercings.

Oak Ridge High School students planned to protest the censorship today by wearing t-shirts such as the one pictured here.

Was the newspaper curricular or extra-curricular?

Virtually all high school newspapers are curricular. But even so, under the "Panda test" soon to be adopted by the Supreme Court in Hosty v. Carter, they can't engage in viewpoint discrimination.

Is an factual article about birth control a viewpoint? Aren't most of the cases in this feild about editorial or opinion-based articles?

This is straight-up Hazlewood, innit? The school can censor to protect kids from hearing things their little sensitive ears can't take.
