I'm a see Superman Returns tonight, and I'm excited to do so. Now's as good a time as any to trot out this classic link, which describes in painful Hollywood detail the long process of development on Superman 5, which bounced around creative teams and could've been a terrible disaster at several turns. Fun read.
Anyway, so I'm scanning Metafilter, and they've got a link up for the Spiderman 3 trailer, which I caught yesterday. Right out of the gate, the
first comment in the Metafilter thread makes an interesting point, comparing Superman to Spiderman. In the first movie, there's the origin story. In the second movie, the hero loses his powers and reveals his secret identity to his girlfriend. In the third movie, the hero battles his evil twin. Not the closest tracking of plots, but oddly similar.
My immediate trailer reaction: Sandman looks really cool, black Spidey is less impressive in flat, dark grey and without the eerie white eyepiece. Also, a lot of what's in the trailer seems derivative: Sandman from the Mummy series, the engagement ring toss from Lord of the Rings, the black tar from either the first Matrix or that episode of Next Generation where Lt. Yar bit the big one. Regardless, looks cool and I'll see it.
