One gene provides fruit fly both antenna and color vision

Did you know this? Read all about it in a Wash U press release. About this discovery I can make the following exciting bullet points:
  • The pretty picture of a fruit fly is labeled "Pretty fly - for a fruit fly." Which I assume to be a reference to the popular Offspring song.
  • Fruit flies have a gene named "spineless." Pretty slick name.
  • The (one) person listed under the heading "Subject Matter Experts" is Ursula Goodenough. Pretty slick name.
That is all.

Back when I worked on fruit flies, one of my labmates once described another labmate as "Pretty white for a fly guy." Oh, how we all laughed...good times.
