Supranationalism consists in states giving a piece of their sovereignty over to another organization, like the relationship between the Member States and the EU. Contrast with intergovernmentalism, best exemplified in sovereign states signing treaties with each other while not giving up any sovereign rights (see the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms).
