In a 1969 interview with Paul Hemphil, a writer for The Nashville Sound: Bright Lights and Country Music, Johnny Cash speaks about the Vietnam War: "...I don't know that much about the war...the way I feel about it, the only good thing that ever came from a war is a song and that's a hell of a way to have to get your songs."
